Seigetsu Shogi Pieces, Mikurajima Boxwood, Superior Carving, Minase Script
A full set of superior-grade carved shogi pieces by Seigetsu in Mikurajima boxwood, written in the historic Minase script.
Among shogi pieces, those cut from Japanese boxwood (hon-tsuge) are considered the finest, and wood from Mikurajima island is the most sought-after. The dealer calls it a classic that every enthusiast hopes to own at least once: richer in resin and tighter in grain than Satsuma boxwood, it darkens and gains depth with use. These are tokujō-bori, superior carved pieces with the characters cut deeply by hand. The Minase script descends from the calligraphy of the courtier Minase Kanenari and is one of the oldest and most admired koma styles, powerful yet elegant. The pieces come with a koma box (komabako).
