Obuchi Ginki Pure Silver Tumbler with Chased Plum Blossoms, Paulownia Box
A pure silver tumbler from Obuchi Ginki, its plum blossoms carved petal by petal with the tagane chisel and coloured by the "saikin" technique so the silver's own lustre shows through.
The plum, one of the "Three Friends of Winter," flowers in the cold and has long stood for nobility and long life in Japan. Obuchi Ginki was founded in Tokyo in 1955; the dealer lists among the company's honours the Tokyo Governor's Prize at the first Tokyo Ginki new-work competition in 1975 (four times in all), the Prime Minister's Prize at the national Nippouren competition in 1979, the Medal with Yellow Ribbon in 1996 and the Order of the Rising Sun in 2004. Tokyo Ginki has been a designated national traditional craft since 1979.
