Nampo Inkstone by Kim Jin-han — Chungnam Intangible Heritage Inkstone Master
A carved inkstone in Nampo baegun-sangseok — the fine "white-cloud" slate of Boryeong that Korean scholars ranked first among inkstone stones — by Kim Jin-han, Chungnam Province Intangible Heritage No. 6 for inkstone making and a Korea Master Craftsman in stone (1996).
Nampo stone has been quarried for inkstones since Goryeo; its dense, even grain grinds ink smooth and quick without wearing the stick unevenly. Kim Jin-han is the third generation of his family at Boryeong, and carves each stone by hand — the grinding field and ink well first, then the relief around the rim. Choose from three designs: a phoenix, pine and crane for long life, or the Heart Sutra carved in full.
