Nakamura Kohei Black Raku Tea Bowl "Amagumo" after Hon'ami Koetsu
A black Raku matcha bowl by Nakamura Kohei after Hon'ami Koetsu's celebrated bowl "Amagumo" (Rain Clouds), its black glaze streaked over iron-toned clay like a passing shower.
Nakamura Kohei was born in Kanazawa in 1948 and graduated in sculpture from Tama Art University in 1973. The dealer notes his works are in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto and the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo. Koetsu's Amagumo, an Important Cultural Property, is one of the most admired Raku bowls of the early Edo period, and interpreting it is a demanding test for a potter.
