Mochiki Yurika Bird's-Nest Bamboo Hand Basket 'Ao' (Green)

A bird's-nest hand basket by the Beppu bamboo artist Mochiki Yurika, woven so that some of the young bamboo's natural green still shows.

Beppu is Japan's foremost centre of bamboo craft, and its makers prefer Oita madake for its long, supple fibres. Here the artist kept part of the fresh green skin and deliberately sun-exposed the top, so the basket shows a gradient from green through ivory, and it will mellow to amber over time. The rounded form recalls a nest. As the shop points out, hand-cut bamboo can leave small protruding ends and the occasional splinter, which are part of the material rather than faults.
