Michitsugu Azan Kyoto Iro-e Tea Bowl with Chrysanthemums
A finely painted Kyo-yaki matcha bowl with chrysanthemums by Kyoto potter Michitsugu Azan, made for the autumn Choyo (chrysanthemum) festival season.
Michitsugu Azan was born in 1938 and works in Imagumano, Higashiyama, Kyoto. His grandfather was the Kutani master Ungai and his father the Kyoto artist Michitsugu Kansai, under whom he learned ceramics; he also studied Japanese painting with Ikeda Michio. That painter's training shows in his delicate, pictorial overglaze enamels, a hallmark of the Kyoto tea-ceramic tradition descending from Ninsei.
