Edo Kiriko Ruri-Blue Crystal Vase, Octagonal Kagome Cut, Glass Studio Saiho, Wooden Box
A tall, heavy Edo kiriko crystal vase in ruri (lapis blue) overlay glass from Glass Studio Saihō, cut with the octagonal kagome (basket-weave) pattern and presented in a wooden box.
Edo kiriko is Tokyo's cut-glass craft, dating from the late Edo period. Cutters grind traditional geometric patterns by hand through a thin layer of coloured glass cased over clear crystal, so the cuts show as brilliant clear lines against the colour. Glass Studio Saihō (硝子工房 彩鳳) is a workshop specialising in this craft, and this vase is sold through its own shop. Kagome, the woven-basket lattice, is one of the classic Edo kiriko patterns, and on this tall form it catches the light from every angle.
