Shion Boxwood Obidome 'Akkamui' Flying Squirrel
$999.00
A Hokkaido flying squirrel caught mid-glide, carved in boxwood by netsuke artist Shion.
Akkamui is the name used for the Ezo momonga, the small flying squirrel of Hokkaido. The gallery describes the piece as capturing a single instant of the animal in flight, with a strong individual character, and notes that the carving is carried through to the reverse as well. Shion works in boxwood, the classic netsuke wood, here combined with hego (tree-fern) wood. Made as an obidome for a kimono obi cord, it is equally striking as a small carving for display.
