Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko 'Shimuja' Flat Bowl in Pearl White, Paulownia Box
A Satsuma kiriko flat bowl from the 'Shimuja' (思無邪) series in a rare pearl-white overlay, made by Shimadzu's Satsuma Glass Craft studio in Kagoshima and presented in a paulownia box.
Satsuma kiriko was first made under the Shimadzu lords of Satsuma in the mid-nineteenth century and was revived in Kagoshima in the 1980s. It is known for its thick colour overlay, cut back so that the colour grades softly into clear glass (bokashi). This bowl has a spider-web cut pattern on the sides and base, with a clear faceted section at the base that refracts the light. It is a practical size for fruit, desserts or salads.
