Sekimoto Chikusai Woven Bamboo Hanging Flower Basket with Signed Box
A small woven-bamboo hanging flower basket (tsuri-kago hanaire) by Sekimoto Chikusai, in its original signed box.
Suspended baskets of this kind hang from the ceiling or a hook in the tokonoma and hold a single seasonal flower, the essence of chabana in the tea room. Its compact size makes it equally suited to a wall or bookshelf. A fitted inner container (otoshi) holds the water. The piece comes from a tea-utensil dealer in Sakai, the city of Sen no Rikyū. The dealer reports some soil marks on the inner container and age-related marks on the wooden box, but no other issues, and says the basket is fully usable.
