Najeon Vanity Box (Gyeongdae) with Peonies by Kim Gil-su — Fold-Up Mirror
$595.00
A gyeongdae — the traditional Korean vanity box with a fold-up mirror — inlaid with peonies in natural mother-of-pearl, by Kim Gil-su.
In Joseon households the gyeongdae was part of a bride's dowry furniture: a mirror that lifts from the lid, with drawers below for combs, hairpins and rouge. Peonies, the flower of wealth and honor, were the motif of choice. This is the form at tabletop scale, still made by hand in lacquer and shell.
