A 30 cm najeon jewelry box by Jang Tae-bok: pine, cranes and flowers in natural mother-of-pearl, on red or black lacquer.

Pine and crane are Korea's paired emblems of long life — the evergreen that outlasts winter and the bird said to live a thousand years. Rendered in cut shell over lacquer, they made the classic keepsake box of a Korean household, given at weddings and sixtieth birthdays.
