Mochiki Yurika Bird's-Nest Bamboo Hand Basket 'Nagaboso' with Canvas Liner
A tall, softly rounded hand basket modelled on a bird's nest, woven from Oita madake bamboo by the Beppu bamboo artist Mochiki Yurika.
Beppu, in Oita Prefecture, is Japan's best-known centre for bamboo basketry, and madake is the long-fibred bamboo its weavers favour. In this 'Nagaboso' (long and slender) form the whole silhouette is rounded and nest-like. The handle is faced with bamboo skin on both sides, and a removable canvas liner with a zip makes it practical to carry. The bamboo starts out ivory and, as the shop notes, slowly deepens to amber with use. Hand-split bamboo can leave a fine splinter, so handle it with ordinary care.
