Hapjukseon White Folding Fan by Kim Dong-sik — Jeonju Fan Master
$850.00
A hapjukseon — the Jeonju folding fan in which every rib is made by laminating two thin layers of bamboo — by Kim Dong-sik, National Intangible Heritage holder for fan making (Seonjajang) and the fourth generation of his family in the craft.
Jeonju fans were once tribute goods sent to the Joseon court. A hapjukseon takes weeks and dozens of steps: bamboo split, shaved and glued back-to-back so each of the forty ribs is both thin and strong, then covered in hand-made hanji mulberry paper. Opened, it spans about 54 cm and closes with a soft, exact snap.
