Sohaku of Nisshin Kikinzoku Hand-Hammered Pure Silver Ice Cream Spoon, Paulownia Box
A hand-hammered spoon in 999 silver by the Tokyo silversmith Sohaku of Nisshin Kikinzoku, made for slicing into ice cream straight from the freezer.
Silver conducts heat better than any other metal, so the warmth of the hand travels to the bowl of the spoon and softens frozen ice cream as it cuts. Nisshin Kikinzoku traces its craft to a line of "gin-shi" silversmiths reaching back to the late Edo period, twelve generations in all, and the Tokyo Ginki tradition is said to descend from the Hirata family. Tokyo Ginki was designated a national traditional craft of Japan in 1979. A small, everyday piece of serious silversmithing, it makes an excellent gift.
