Hyuga Clamshell Go Stones, "Snow" Grade No. 30 (8.0 mm) — Certified, with Nachi Slate Black

$3,450.00

A full set of genuine Hyuga clamshell go stones in the top "Snow" (yuki) grade, No. 30 (8.0 mm), paired with Nachi slate black stones. Certified as a Miyazaki Prefecture traditional craft. New. Hyuga stock of this grade is currently sold out at Japan's English-language export shops.

The white stones of a fine go set are cut from the shell of the hamaguri clam, and the most prized shell of all came from Okuragahama beach in Hyuga, Miyazaki. The beds have been exhausted for decades, so true Hyuga stones are now cut only from old stock and are rarer every year. "Snow" is the highest grade: dense, fine, straight grain at the edges, a soft wave in the centre and an even creamy white. Each stone is cut and polished by hand. The black stones are Nachiguro, the traditional slate of Kumano in Mie Prefecture, finished with a light protective oil.
