Aya Akiba Glass Covered Box 'Land of Ice – Seal Pup' (Futamono)

A small white-glass covered box in the form of an igloo, with a seal pup resting on the lid, by glass artist Aya Akiba.

Covered vessels (futamono) are a signature form for Aya Akiba. Here an igloo of white glass carries a seal pup on top, and the interior is finished in plain white. The gallery notes the careful polishing that brings out the smooth surface and the seal's endearing expression. Small lidded boxes of this kind have a long life in Japanese interiors as kōgō-style containers for incense, tiny treasures or simply as a sculpture for a shelf. A charming, wintry piece of contemporary studio glass.
