The dealer calls it a classic that every enthusiast hopes to own at least once: richer in resin and tighter in grain than Satsuma boxwood, it darkens and gains depth with use. These are tokujō-bori, superior carved pieces with the characters cut deeply by hand. The Minase script descends from the calligraphy of the courtier Minase Kanenari and is one of the oldest and most admired koma styles, powerful yet elegant. The pieces come with a koma box (komabako).

Details

Maker: Seigetsu (晴月)

Material: Mikurajima boxwood (御蔵島産本黄楊)

Type: superior carved pieces (特上彫駒)

Script: Minase (水無瀬書)

Box: piece box included (駒箱付き)

Condition: new

Watch: Mikurajima boxwood for shogi pieces

An Asahi Shimbun report on Mikurajima island's boxwood and its use for the finest shogi pieces.
