Here the artist kept part of the fresh green skin and deliberately sun-exposed the top, so the basket shows a gradient from green through ivory, and it will mellow to amber over time. The rounded form recalls a nest. As the shop points out, hand-cut bamboo can leave small protruding ends and the occasional splinter, which are part of the material rather than faults.

Details

Artist: Mochiki Yurika (持木百合香), Beppu

Title: 鳥の巣 手籠 「あお」

Material: madake bamboo from Oita Prefecture

Size: W 26 × D 14 × H 27 cm (35 cm including handle); opening 17 × 11 cm

Box: none stated; shipped in protective packaging

Condition: new; the only one in stock

Watch: Beppu bamboo weaving

An Oita Godo Shimbun film on Beppu bamboo craft and its weavers.
