His grandfather was the Kutani master Ungai and his father the Kyoto artist Michitsugu Kansai, under whom he learned ceramics; he also studied Japanese painting with Ikeda Michio. That painter's training shows in his delicate, pictorial overglaze enamels, a hallmark of the Kyoto tea-ceramic tradition descending from Ninsei.

Details

Artist: Michitsugu Azan (通次阿山), Kyoto

Technique: iro-e overglaze enamels, chrysanthemum design

Size: approx. 11.3 cm diameter × 9 cm high

Box: wooden box

Condition: new

Watch: overglaze gold painting on Kyo-yaki

A certified traditional craftsman of the Kyoto kiln Hashimoto Jogaku demonstrates overglaze gold painting on a matcha bowl, from the Kyoto no Arukikata channel.
