Bizen is unglazed stoneware fired for days in wood-burning kilns, where ash deposits and flame contact create the natural variations in colour and texture prized by collectors; no two pieces fire alike. Fujiwara Yu was known for strong, generous jar forms, and at 22 cm in both height and width this piece has real presence on a shelf or low table.

Details

Artist: Fujiwara Yu (藤原雄)

Title: 備前小壺 (Bizen small jar)

Size: diameter 22 cm × height 22 cm

Unglazed wood-fired Bizen stoneware

Original signed wooden box (tomobako)

Condition: generally good per the dealer; pre-owned

Watch: how Bizen ware is made and wood-fired

A film on Bizen, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, from the official Six Ancient Kilns Japan Heritage council channel.
